How to remember to take your medsįorgetting to take your Rx once in a while is inevitable-but there are things you can do to keep your meds top of mind. If you’re feeling anxious or unsure of what to do, reach out to your doctor or pharmacist. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, simply take it as usual, says Berger. (Missed more than one dose? Consult check with your doctor or pharmacist about how to move forward.) Can’t remember if you took your meds? “It’s such a low dose of hormones per pill that you won’t have side effects from doubling up,” Berger says. If you forget a dose and don’t realize until the next day, Berger says to take two pills at your usual time (instead of the usual single pill) and also use a back-up form of birth control for the next seven days. Missing your daily pill could lead to big consequences-like an unintended pregnancy. There’s one (very important!) exception to this rule: birth control. So for the example above, if you’re supposed to take a particular prescription in the morning and at night, but you missed the morning dose, don’t take two pills at 8 p.m. In general, Berger says to avoid doubling up on your medication even if you’re certain you missed a dose. “Even if the store is closed, you can go on our app and chat with pharmacists,” Berger notes. Walgreens makes it easy to get in touch: You can either call your local store, or use their Pharmacy Chat* feature to connect with a pharmacist online, 24/7. Now you’re back on track! Feel like your Rx might be an exception to this rule? Play it safe and contact your pharmacist. But if you realize you missed it late in the day (say at 3 p.m.), skip it-just take your 8 p.m. If you realize you missed the morning dose at 11 a.m., go ahead and take it. ![]() If it’s only been a few hours since your missed dose, go ahead and take it.įor example, say you need to pop a pill twice a day, once at 8 a.m. If it’s been more than a few hours, hold off and take your next dose on schedule. But Danielle Berger, PharmD, a pharmacist who manages a Walgreens store in Charlotte, NC, recommends this general rule of thumb: If it’s only been a few hours since your missed dose, go ahead and take it then, pop your next pill as usual. You missed a dose-now what?Īgain, it depends on the medication you’re on. ⚠️ Play it safe: If you’re ever confused about a prescription or what to do if you miss your meds, always contact your pharmacist or doctor. So if you skip a dose, your condition could worsen or become harder to treat, or you might experience unpleasant side effects or complications. Other meds-like antibiotic treatments for infections-exit your bloodstream quickly. So if you miss a dose once in awhile (emphasis on once in a while-don’t make it a habit), it’s typically not a huge deal, since some of your last dose will still be in your system. In general, many maintenance medications remain in your bloodstream for a while. What exactly happens when you skip a dose is very dependent on the medication and how long the drug stays in your system. Because life happens-sometimes pets get sick or a friend calls at the exact moment your pill alarm goes off. Even if you’re the most organized person, you’ve probably missed a medication dose at least once.
